Rotary has a simple custom that says a great deal: when one club visits another, they exchange pennants. It is a piece of fabric with a name, a crest and a motto. But whoever receives it knows that behind it there is a shared meal, a conversation and a friendship in the making.
Today our club keeps some fifty pennants from other clubs. They come from seventeen countries on four continents. There are pennants from Finland and Botswana, from Japan and Brazil, from Lithuania, Canada and Thailand. And many are from closer to home: from clubs in our own District 2203, who are neighbours and friends.
Our own story
The collection also tells our own story. It brings together the pennants of the two clubs that gave rise to ours. The RC Alicante Lucentum pennant shows the sword hilt with a double-headed eagle found at Lucentum. The RC Alicante Puerto pennant shows its sailing boat and the city skyline by the sea. And beside them is the pennant of RC Alicante Lucentum Puerto, the club born from the union of both, which carries the best of each.
Every pennant was brought by a fellow Rotarian who came to see us, or we received it when we returned the visit. We learned something from all of them. A way of organising a project, a way of welcoming newcomers, or an idea we later made our own. You cannot see that in the fabric, but it stays in the club.
