A history spanning more than a century
Rotary was founded in Chicago in 1905, when the lawyer Paul Harris brought together a small group of professionals from different trades with a simple idea: to create a space of friendship and trust that could also be used to do good.
Today that idea has grown into one of the largest volunteer networks in the world, organised into self-governing local clubs grouped into districts. Our club belongs to District 2203.
One of its best-known achievements is the End Polio Now campaign, which has reduced polio cases by more than 99.9% since 1985.
How a club works
A Rotary club meets on a fixed schedule. In our case, on Tuesdays: a working lunch with a talk, an update on ongoing projects and follow-up on the club's initiatives.
Each club is organised into committees and elects an annual board of directors. Members contribute their time and professional knowledge; the funds raised go entirely to the projects.
The Four-Way Test guides every decision: is it the truth?, is it fair to all concerned?, will it build goodwill and better friendships?, will it be beneficial to all concerned?
